24-year-old behind bars in connection with fatal beatings at Pleasant Grove restaurant

A 24-year-old man is behind bars in connection with the fatal beating of a man at a restaurant in Pleasant Grove last month.

Jose Carlos Zuniga is facing a murder charge in the murder of Enrique Pineda. His attorney did not immediately return a request for comment.

The two men were at the El Pulpo restaurant in the 7900 block of Lake June Road on March 27 when Zuniga and another man went to the restroom at around 12:15 a.m., according to an affidavit with a warrant for his arrest.

A few minutes later, Pineda tried to go to the bathroom, but the door was locked from the inside. Zuniga was angry that Pineda tried to enter the bathroom and punched him in the head and face, the affidavit states.

Security guards broke up the fight and Zuniga and his group were escorted out of the restaurant, according to the affidavit.

Pineda’s eye was bruised and his nose was bleeding, and he left the restaurant with the rest of his group. Later that night he had a seizure at home and was taken to hospital with an internal head injury, the affidavit states.

He was declared brain dead on March 31, according to the affidavit.

Detectives were able to identify Zuniga in part through a distinctive facial tattoo, the affidavit states.

Zuniga was taken to the Dallas County Jail on Thursday and remains in custody, with bond set at $500,000.

Jail records show Zuniga is on probation for manslaughter in a 2014 case when he was a minor.
