A Mediterranean grill opens its doors at Pearl

The team behind Austin’s famous Emmer & Rye have announced the opening of a Mediterranean concept, Ladino, next summer at Il Sogno Osteria’s former home in Pearl.

“I am more than delighted and delighted that Ladino is opening its doors,” says Executive Chef Berty Richter. “For most of my culinary career, I wanted to create a concept like this and share my vision of Mediterranean cuisine, influenced by my Sephardic roots and traditions, and tell a story that has never been told in through the food here in Texas. “

The Mediterranean grill will include a charcoal barbecue and wood-fired oven, as well as a menu of pita, mezze, vegetables and fresh dishes with bold spices and herbs.

Ladino, or Judeo-Spanish, is a Romance language that follows the route of the migration of the Jewish people from Spain dating back to the mid-1500s. Although not common, it is still spoken by some Sephardic Jews and is a language Richter spoke at home growing up, according to a statement from Pearl.

He chose it for the name of the restaurant with the aim of highlighting the Judeo-Balkan cuisine of his childhood as well as the culture and cooking style that surrounds him. The nod to Middle Eastern and Balkan cuisine and culture will continue from the menu to the decor, music, drinks and ambiance of the restaurant, the statement said.

Ladino is the second restaurant in Texas with Richter as executive chef. He also opened TLV at Austin’s Fareground Food Hall in 2019.

It is the seventh concept of Emmer & Rye Hospitality Group. The group’s namesake, Emmer & Rye, was named Best Restaurant by San Antonio Magazine sister publication, Austin Monthly, in 2016 and was also named a finalist for Enjoy your mealétit 2016 best new restaurants.
