Man arrested after being found with a machete in a restaurant

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (AP) — Police say a man was committed against his will after he was found armed with a machete and suffering from a mental breakdown at a Taco Bell restaurant in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. North Carolina.

Police said in a news release Saturday that the man was transported to Nash UNC Health Care.

The Rocky Mount Telegram reports that once released from medical attention, police said the man will also be issued warrants charging him with assault with a deadly weapon causing serious injury and robbery with a dangerous weapon.

State law allows a person to be evaluated and hospitalized against their own will, if there is clear evidence that the person is dangerous to themselves or others.

When the police arrived, they discovered that the man had hit a woman with the machete. Police said the woman was treated by emergency medical services personnel and transported to Nash UNC Health Care for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries before being released.

Police said officers were able to de-escalate the situation with the man.

Police said they later determined the man had robbed someone from the restaurant before officers arrived. According to the police, the victim of the robbery was not injured.
