Migration to electric vehicles is an incredible business opportunity for restaurantsElectricity can be the future of transport. As gas prices continue to soar and OPEC+ announces they will cut oil production, electric vehicles (EV) are attracting more and more people. In fact, 2021 has been the strongest year yet for electric vehicles, with electric car sales their gasoline counterparts. Demand for electric vehicles is so high that many brands need buyers make depositsand some models are already sold out for the next two years.

The migration to electric vehicles represents a great business opportunity for restaurants. Adding electric vehicle charging stations to their parking lots can be instrumental in attracting key audiences, generating more business and increasing restaurant profits.

This is a good time for restaurants to:

  • Welcome to the EV trend. The electric vehicle market has witnessed phenomenal growth in 2021, which is expected to continue this year and beyond. As more car brands introduce EV models — and government incentives provide another reason to buy EVs — more consumers are switching from gasoline-powered cars to electric cars. California leads the way in electric vehicle sales and pledges to completely stop selling gasoline-powered vehicles by 2035 to meet ambitious environmental goals. As more and more people adopt electric vehicles, their needs will change and they will no longer rely solely on gas stations and convenience stores to fill their tanks. Now, restaurants with charging stations can capture the large demographic of electric vehicle owners and reap the significant benefits that come with it.
  • Recognize the significant changes electric vehicles will bring. For many years, consumers have wanted a “to-go” experience when filling up their car. They would visit gas stations or convenience stores, fill up their cars, grab a quick snack and drink, and be back on the road in minutes. Now that pattern is changing. Consumers will need to periodically charge their car, which can take an hour or more, and will need something to do while they wait. That means restaurants will be competing with other businesses — including malls, grocery stores, convenience stores and pharmacies — to be considered an EV charging destination. Brands want to attract EV owners and convince them to come stay – and spend – with them.
  • Do something your competitors aren’t doing. It’s wise to provide equipment that your competitors don’t have. EV owners will frequent your restaurant over the competition if you offer EV charging stations and they don’t. Plus, your competitors will look like they’re not as sustainable or environmentally conscious as your restaurant. Installing charging stations is a powerful way to differentiate your restaurant from other brands and give customers a good green reason to choose your location over another.
  • Give people what they want. People (especially millennials) want to support sustainable brands. Adding charging stations is therefore a great way to attract customers and prospects. Keep in mind that more than 70% of EV buyers have a 4+ year college degree and earn over $100,000 a year – so this is a very attractive demographic with money to spend! And more and more people want to work for sustainable companies. During the ongoing labor shortage, your restaurant’s commitment to sustainability can be an important differentiator in attracting new employees. Finally, many investors are keen to support sustainable brands and invest in environmentally friendly businesses.
  • Amplify your sustainability efforts. You may already be using cloth napkins instead of paper. Perhaps you offer incentives to customers who bring their own reusable coffee cups or takeout containers. You could compost, avoid plastic straws, and provide QR code menus instead of disposable ones. If you’re looking for the next sustainable initiative for your brand, consider adding electric vehicle charging stations. While environmentally conscious customers and prospects won’t see your cloth napkins or biodegradable straws as they pass by, they’ll surely notice your EV charging stations outside and recognize your sustainability efforts. This is a strong signal to key audiences that you take green initiatives seriously.
  • Improve brand awareness and loyalty. Potential customers, employees and investors seek to support socially responsible businesses. An EV charging station is a unique opportunity to show these key audiences that you are forward-thinking and committed to sustainability. It can also increase your brand visibility and awareness, as some EV charger manufacturers offer the option to customize EV stations with your company branding. It’s a great way to generate more attention, traffic, and revenue.
  • Attract visitors as well as locals. EV owners rely on apps like ChargeHub, PlugShare, Zap Map, etc. to find nearby charging stations. Once you’ve installed EV chargers locally, be sure to list your restaurant on these sites to help you attract loyal, local customers, as well as EV owners visiting or just passing through your location. region. As EV sales continue to increase, this will become an even more important tactic for driving more EV traffic to your location – literally and figuratively.
  • Prioritize QA and safety. Consumers want a clean, safe place to eat, relax and charge their car. Therefore, it is essential to use technological tools to carry out safety inspections, ensure that food is kept at appropriate temperatures, check cleanliness, etc. Manual (or outdated/disjointed technical systems) cannot provide a complete view of your restaurant and real-time critical data. . Instead, rely on built-in software that will identify areas of non-compliance so you can take immediate corrective action. Today’s digital solutions are affordable, accessible and user-friendly, and are viable for restaurants of all sizes and budgets.
  • Monitor suppliers throughout the supply chain. It’s not enough to implement strict QA and safety protocols in your restaurant – you should also monitor all of your suppliers to ensure they are also following strict food safety and QA protocols. Technology tools make it easy, fast, accurate and affordable to manage supplier certifications, organize these documents in a central area, and ensure supplier compliance throughout the supply chain.

Installing charging stations has many important business benefits. This effort can help you attract key audiences, increase your visibility, demonstrate your sustainability, and increase your bottom line.
