NorthPark seeks new gold backer as Comerica pulls out

NorthPark Gold — a welcome graduation gift and bling that’s often included in rich loot bags from charity events and school fundraising auctions — is fading fast.

The heavy gold coins packaged in fancy pouches are temporarily ditched by the Dallas Mall for a more convenient but less dramatic NorthPark Center gift card.

But maybe not forever.

Dallas-based Comerica Bank told the mall it could no longer support gold coins, but the mall said it was not giving up on the concept of successful marketing.

Over the years, the mall would sometimes run out in the weeks leading up to Christmas, fill up with gift cards, and quickly reorganize with its custom parts maker. As one Dallas customer said during a facebook post, “There’s something about having a pocket full of gold to spend, make the experience at NorthPark magical.”

The mall said on its website that it had temporarily suspended coin sales “due to the inability of NorthPark’s banking partner, Comerica Bank NorthPark Branch,” to handle gift coin transactions at the mall. coming.

Shops and restaurants will accept coins until July 10. Holders can also redeem the coins for gift cards at the concierge desk near Neiman Marcus, the mall said.

Until NorthPark finds a new system for physical coins, the mall said its concierge will sell the NorthPark Gold gift card issued by American Express, which is also redeemable at more than 200 mall retailers and restaurants.

“We apologize for any inconvenience and hope to continue the NorthPark Gold Gift Coin program in the future,” the mall said.

The mall added in an email response: “We are exploring the possibility of continuing the program with another bank.”
