The Butler’s Dining Got Better: A Review Of The Butler’s Kitchen

I think we can all agree that last year has been less than optimal for many reasons – including Butler to eat. Atherton’s food was a frequent complaint for my roommate and I. The plum market was expensive and we never went to ResCo as they served the exact same food as Atherton. And I think I speak for everyone when I say that no one appreciated not being able to sit and eat with their friends or classmates.

But – and there is a but – it was during a difficult part of the pandemic. Bon Appetit and its staff faced changes and restrictions that they did not have much time to prepare for. So while the food and restaurant environment is not great, we cannot put all the blame on the restaurant services.

That being said, it’s always hard to get past first impressions. The “marinated and grilled chicken breast” has become a common joke – because it was dry and bland.

Isabel Austin – second year computer science student – confirmed my suspicions about the quality of food at Atherton, Plum and ResCo. Austin had yet to eat at ResCo this year, and with his life situation changing with the new school year, his preferences have also changed since last year.

“I had a preference for ResCo because it was very convenient,” Austin said. “Now I seem to have a preference for Plum. Just because Atherton food gets very repetitive and I really like Caesar salads at Plum.

Despite this problem of repetitiveness at Atherton, Austin always enjoyed food and never expressed a problem with the quality. She found that ResCo had more diverse options than Atherton, and found Plum’s salads to still taste fresh.

While Austin’s experience with the Butler Restaurant’s most popular options can best be described as relatively smooth sailing, Madeline Freeman – a junior studying Strategic Communication and Spanish – had a much more difficult start to her experience. culinary.

I was particularly interested in her thoughts on Atherton after she had had an argument with moldy food the year before.

“So last year it’s kinda weird because – you know – we couldn’t eat in the dining room,” Freeman said. “And it feels like the food is a little moldy and it was disgusting.” But this year, what I’ve experienced so far is that there was more to choose from. That it’s just an overall better environment because you can actually sit down with your friends this year.

Bon Appetit’s comeback – in the midst of a difficult year and a half of changing restrictions, road bumps and student complaints – is truly impressive.

Freeman also said that she currently prefers Atherton because there was more to choose from and the made-to-order items at Plum took forever to manufacture. This experience is not his either – I still remember waiting at least half an hour in the absolute freezer that is Plum Market for a burger and fries that I ordered. Just a note, the Boost mobile app will be your friend when it comes to ordering food from Plum.

Freeman also said she won’t buy the snacks from Plum with her own money – not just because of the price – but because of the organic brands they provide. Freeman said that sometimes regular brands taste better – and I totally agree: you shouldn’t buy Plum’s ramen under any circumstances.

However, Freeman added that the potstickers at Atherton are priceless. She and her roommate would fill an entire box and eat them all at once. If you judge them, you are wrong and have to try it for yourself. You will be better off for it.

Savannah Shultt, a second year Communication and Disorder Science student, also believes Atherton is overcoming her previous bad patch. Shultt currently alternates between Atherton and Plum for her meals, rarely traveling to ResCo since she no longer lives there.

“I feel like it got a bit better,” said Shultt. “… like last year, like the food is always like, hit or miss, but now like this year I feel like … it’s a little better than the last.”

Atherton gains yet another point of improvement so far. Shultt didn’t comment on Plum’s pricing because she has so many flexible dollars that it doesn’t seem like a problem for her. She mentioned that the food options on campus are quite diverse, and as a picky eater, she always found something she wanted to eat. His favorite dish is grilled Atherton cheese.

When I started this story, I knew I had to cover one of the most talked about changes in Butler’s catering: Butler Brew’s decadent new milkshake. Of course, I tried the Blue Moon milkshake because I was very excited about the cheesecake on top. I love the cheesecake. It was really very good, the slice looks huge in the photos but it’s the perfect size. The milkshake is definitely not for someone who can’t stand a lot of sweetness.

If you don’t like Blue Moon flavored ice cream, this milkshake is not for you – the flavor is very strong. The only real downside is that over a third of the outside of the mug is covered in frosting or whipped cream and sprinkles, which is fine in theory, but in practice you end up with sticky blue hands.
