UPDATE at 19:21 to reflect that Angela West’s arrest took place on Friday evening.
The wife of Republican candidate for Texas governor Allen West was arrested Friday night on suspicion of drunk driving while her grandson was in the car.
Angela West was incarcerated in Dallas County Jail for impaired driving with a child under the age of 15, according to a police report. Allen West said in a tweet posted just after 3 p.m. that she was released. It does not appear in the prison files.
Angela West was arrested around 8:45 p.m. Friday in the 2300 block of the West Northwest Freeway, near Loop 12 and Harry Hines Boulevard, according to the report. The report said the officer believed she was intoxicated and performed a field sobriety test, which led to her arrest.
She was taken to the Dallas County Jail and officers took a blood sample, the report says.
In a video posted to Twitter around 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, Allen West said he had returned from dinner in Waco when he learned of the arrest. He said he was told his wife had been charged with “suspicion of drunk driving”.
Speaking from prison, he said his grandson was left with two Dallas cops until his youngest daughter could pick him up “from the side of the road.” Dallas Police, however, said the child was returned to his father.
“I support the thin blue line, but it’s insidious,” West said in the video.
“They put my grandson in danger, in danger, left him with some cops and took his grandmother to jail,” West said.
West said his wife dined at a PF Chang’s in Dallas before her arrest and witnesses said she only drank water and lemonade in the restaurant.
“I am more than livid,” he said. “I’m telling you something, Dallas County Sheriff’s Office, Dallas Police Chief – I want an explanation on this.”
The police department and the sheriff’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
